Webster’s Dictionary defines a coronation as the crowning of a monarch or sovereign, often accompanied by the accession and investiture of a head of state, which formally bestows honors and rankings on a person as the culmination of an effort or endeavor.
On Sunday night, July 2, 2025, as daylight faded in the rustic village of Galway, Ireland, on the hollowed inks land of Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland, hard on the West Coast of the North Sea, Scottie Scheffler claimed the crown of Champion Golfer of the Year at the 153rd addition of the Open Championship, further bolstering his status as the dominant golfer of his era.
“None of us could hang with Scottie this week, said Rory McIlroy, who finished tied for third, “he is playing golf from the gods.’
Added Zander Schauffele, “I do not think the golfing world would see someone as dominant as Tiger come through so soon.
He has seized the throne of dominance.”
Golf is a bewildering game for beginners; it becomes even harder to move to a higher level of experience.
Casual golf for the everyday player is the pursuit of mastering a challenging game.
Tournament golf is the attempted mastery of an exceedingly difficult game under demanding and exceptional circumstances and is the accepted benchmark of excellence in the sport.
Very few have achieved that level of success.
Those who have done so have their names etched and enshrouded in the sports archives.
Young Tom Morris, Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.
Each of these trendsetters and gifted athletes made significant contributions to the games’ chronicles, adding to the sport’s narrative while refining and setting the tone and nature of the competitions.
But fame and glory are fleeting mistresses whose fallibility under duress is legend.
Unsullied golf may never be truly conquered, accomplished, or realized indefinitely.
Triumph and achievement may only be visited briefly.
At the same time, longevity, especially in major golf tournaments, is the defining characteristic of superstardom in the sport of golf and defines the status and standing of its participants.
On Sunday at Portrush, Scheffler won his fourth major golf tournament overall and second of 2025, exhibiting the category of consistency that the legends mentioned above all performed during their Hall of Fame careers.
Since turning professional four years ago, Scottie is quickly adding his name to the Pantheon of golfing greats of renown and notoriety.
A prodigy since his junior days, Schaeffer, at 29, has excelled at every level of competitive golf.
Only Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player won the Open, Masters, and PGA before the age of 30.
Scottie has earned four wins this season, 13 top 10 finishes—two in majors—and now holds 20 professional victories worldwide.
Schffler is also the first No.1 in the world to win the Open since 2006.
With four majors now under his belt, Scheffler joins a small list of multiple major tournament champions, alongside Phil Mickelson, who leads all active players with five majors.
Other players with four major titles include Rory McIlroy, Ernie Els, and Brooks Koepka.
It is no surprise Scheffler is being compared to Tiger Woods.
“I never thought in my lifetime I would see a player as close to Tiger Woods as this man is, said Jim “Bones” Mackay, Phil Mickelson’s caddy for 25 years.
“He is,” as Rory McIlroy proclaimed, “The bar we are all trying to reach for.”
That is evident by the body of work Scheffler has produced over the last few years, the tournaments he has won, and the major championships he has collected, suggesting a torch has been passed.
A coronation has occurred, which the golf public, players, and the sporting world have acknowledged.
Scottie Schefflernis is the best golfer in the world, and the crown of eminences he has earned and now wears is no one’s to bear for as long as his interests and competitive fire burn.
